Joe's first week at home

Joe's first week at home was a busy one as we prepared for Christmas, but we had a great week together and enjoyed Daddy being home from work to share that time with us as a family. During the first week of Ben's life, I probably took 2000 pictures, mostly of him sleeping. That was a little challenging to try and keep up with this time since I now had a toddler hanging on my leg during shoots! Poor second child...but I still tried to capture some shots before he changed too much!

Sweet big brother helping out the swing:

I have NO CLUE what Ben was doing here, but clearly Joe did not like it!

I LOVE this one!

 My boys snuggling....

At five days old, he tagged along with me to Ben's school for his Christmas program. As room mom, I had a party to throw so Joe came right along with me! He wasn't much of a partier though!

I at least got a lot of pictures with my phone, which is better than nothing!

Welcome home, Joe!

We came home to a very sweet welcome with some family and our dear friend, Ashley who had done so many sweet things to welcome us!

Our first picture as a family of FOUR!

When we first introduced Joe to Ben, we asked him what he thought about Joe. He responded "bye, bye!" But as the hours went on, he really warmed up to him and was so excited to have him home. He is such a sweet big brother and LOVES Joe so much now. He is constantly giving him fist bumps and high fives!

Here, Ben is giving Joe a kiss to thank him for the "Ho Ho" cup that he brought him. Although it looks a bit more like he is eating him!

We made it "Facebook official" with this picture announcing that Ben is a BIG brother! We had only shared the news about Joe with a few people before we brought him home. So most people did not even know that we were expecting another baby and we shocked to see the news!

Joe's placement story

This is the story of bringing Joe home. It's a long one, I know. And it is probably more detail than you care for. But, I am writing it for two reasons. 1. I want to record it to be able to share with Joe some day. 2. I want to be able to share with you all of the unique joys and challenges that come with adoption.

On Friday, December 14th, we had dinner with our birthmother. She told us the name that she had picked for him was Gabriel (when you adopt through New Life, you agree to keep one name that the birthmother chooses as a part of his name.) My wheels started turning because the name we liked doesn't go with Gabriel, so I knew I needed to choose another! She is a tiny little thing and at 38.3 weeks pregnant, she looked as though she were going to explode! She had been contracting for a few days was so incredibly uncomfortable. So, I was not surprised when we got the call the next morning that she was at the hospital and 7cm dilated!

Rusty was playing golf, so I called him and said "It's happening! She is in the hospital!" Neither one of us knew what to do with ourselves... we were beyond excited! He came home and when he walked in the door, I said "We need a name. Here are my two options. Sit down you can't get up until we decide!" So we decided his name would be Joseph (a family name on both sides) Gabriel.

Then, there was radio silence for a few hours. The longest hours ever. The agency had not heard from the birth mom (which is not uncommon), but I was dying to know anything. Finally, we heard that he was born and healthy, but that is all we knew.  We spent the rest of the day getting ready for Joe, running last minute errands and trying to spend some quality time with Ben on his last weekend as an only child! We scheduled a visit to go see her in the hospital the next day.

We got up and went to church, but I was mostly just going through the motions. My heart and my thoughts were definitely elsewhere. I just could not wait to meet him, to hold him and to know more details. And yet I was so scared. So far, this process had been so much different than Ben and I just didn't know if this boy was coming home with us. It's a difficult place to be... wanting to love him fully and embrace this new child and yet trying desperately to guard your heart and protect yourself from hurt.

We went to the hospital that day and got to visit his birthmom. We found out that she had not told any of the staff about her plan to place for adoption and my heart just sank. That scared me so. Her family was there, most of who supported her decision. But she had a sister that was obviously struggling with it and it made for a pretty uncomfortable time. I held Joe for a quick minute with everyone looking at me just didn't feel comfortable enough to get the cuddles I wanted. She had a friend come visit her who also did not know about her plan, so we stepped out and let them visit. That was a sweet time with Joe's birth grandmother where we were able to share some very honest emotions and I did my best to reassure her.

We went back to the room and Rusty got to hold Joe for a few minutes while I snapped a few photos to show when we got home. We gave her some gifts and then we left feeling even more torn than before. We were hopeful and loved him already, but so terribly afraid.

The next morning, Rusty went to work for a few hours and I took Ben to school. I was so distracted that I forgot his bag and his lunch, so had to run and get him some to take back! The phone rang and it was the case worker at New Life. My heart stopped. I just knew that she had changed her mind. But, actually she was just calling to clarify some details on the paperwork. I rushed home and got ready, met Rusty and we headed to the hospital. The phone rang as we pulled out of the neighborhood and we looked at each other in a panic. Rusty stopped the car in the middle of the road. "It's Cindy. Oh no." I just knew that Cindy was calling to tell me personally that she had changed her mind. But no, she just wanted to know how away we were because they were ready for us. We drove as fast as we could to the hospital, thinking it was a good sign that they wanted us there already but still not sure.

From a work standpoint, Cindy did not need to be at this placement because she had not worked with this birth mom, but she was so sweet to want to be there for us. Our birth mom had asked to have a pastor at the placement and we were so honored that Ed agreed to come Cindy to the placement so that he could pray over us. This couple has been so instrumental in my life and it was such an honor to have them there to share this day.  We signed all of our paperwork and then we sat waiting to hear that our birthmom was ready for us to come up to her room.

We walked in and she was holding Joe on her chest. She had been crying. Her mom was with her and she had been crying too. The mood was somber. They were pleasant, but it was just awkward. I gave our birthmom a gift from Rusty's mom and also a gift from us- a James Avery remembrance ring with his birthstone. I explained to her how special it was for me to wear one for Holland and that I wanted her to have one too. We all cried. And the we sat. And sat. And waited and waited some more. We were waiting on the pediatrician to come and give Joe the ok to be discharged. For a few minutes, we were left alone in the room with our birthmom and her mom. Trying to break the awkward silence, I proudly shared with her the name that we had chosen, Joseph Gabriel. She looked at me with a blank stare and then she and her mom looked at each other. It was obvious that she was upset. I wanted to puke. "What's wrong", I asked. "You don't like the name." "You didn't want to use Gabriel as the first?" she asked. I explained to her that we liked the name and intended to keep it, but we were going to use Joseph as his first because it was a family name. Then, it got even more awkward. We sat there in silence. She clung to Joe and my heart got heavier and heavier.

Finally, I had to leave the room and I broke down. I just lost it. I was so heartbroken. The very LAST thing that I ever wanted to do is to hurt her. This is exactly why I used to say I would never do domestic adoption. Why I didn't think that I could have a relationship with a birthmother. I have been so hurt and disappointed as a birthmom and I NEVER want to be on the other side of it, hurting someone else.

The nurses took us to a different room to give us discharge instructions and then we waited outside her room as they loaded her up. She came out in the wheelchair, holding Joe and we walked behind her as they wheeled us to the chapel. I felt like I was the enemy, like I was there to steal her baby.

We got downstairs and everyone went into the chapel except me. I stopped at the doors and physically could not go in. Cindy came out and asked what was wrong and I just sobbed to her. "I cannot do this, Cindy. I can't. She is mad at us, I hurt her and I feel like I am stealing her baby." There is probably not another person on this earth that could have comforted me in that moment other than Cindy. I don't think anyone else could have gotten me through the doors of that chapel. But God, in His infinite provision, allowed her to be there that day to wipe away my tears, tuck my hair behind my ear like a mother does and usher me in to accept His plan for our family.

Ed spoke for a few minutes as we all stood around in a circle and then he prayed over Joe, over us and over our birthmom and her family. It was a sweet time, but one of the hardest of my life. She held Joe and kissed him goodbye and my heart was broken for her. The emotion of that moment is as strong for me today almost 14 years after I experienced it myself. She handed Joe to her mom, who said her goodbyes and then handed him to me. We hugged and sobbed. That was the first time I had held him since we got there. I wanted to feel joyful. I wanted to be thankful, but all I could feel was devastated for her. I felt her emptiness and her pain. We have a video of that time and I am so thankful to have it. One day, I want to be able to show Joe how loved he is.
She left and we stayed for a few minutes. Cindy and Ed reassured me that my feelings were not from the Lord and that I could not allow the enemy to lie to me. I have embraced that advice in so many moments.

I wiped away enough snot to pose for a few pictures.

We loaded up and we headed home with our son in the backseat.

When left the hospital with Ben, we were on cloud nine, ecstatic, hearts overflowing. But that situation had been so different. We had spent the previous days with him in the NICU bonding. And our birthmom terminated her rights after she went home so we did not have to physically see her hurting and in pain. We weren't oblivious to what she was  feeling, but we did not have to see it.

But with Joe, we drove away with desperately heavy hearts. "That sucked." I said. I didn't know how else to describe it. "Yes, it did." Rusty agreed. We talked some and then we rode in silence. I prayed for God to comfort our birthmom as she drove him with empty arms and I prayed for Him to quickly replace our sorrow and pain with joy!

I wanna come back... I think.

So, I think that I want to get back to the blog world. Maybe. I kind of miss it. A lot.  Sometimes. Not sure that I even have any readers left.

Is this the best timing? Probably not. I am just learning how to manage this whole two children thing. But nevertheless, I want to. I want Joe's life to be celebrated and recorded the same way that Ben's was (or was at least for the first 10 months or so until I gave up!) I might give up again. I might be terrible at this again. But, I am going to try!

So, most importantly... I want to introduce you to Joseph Gabriel Woolley!!!

Joe was born on December 15th at 11:04am and came home with us 2 days later. It has been an incredible month with him as we all get adjusted to life as a family of four. Ben ADORES him and kisses him ALL the time! He wants to give him high fives and fist bumps constantly. If he cries, he is so concerned and runs to help "fix" it.  Joe is a very easy baby, for the most part. He sleeps a ton (well, during the day at least!) and is very easy going. He loves to snuggle and I spend lots of time not getting much accomplished because I want to hold him.

Our journey to Joe was a short one, you might say. We were not looking to grow our family yet, but God had other plans. We decided to show our profile to our birthmom on the week of Thanksgiving, she picked us and a few days later, we were meeting her for the first time! Over the next few weeks, we had the chance to meet with her and her family several times and get to spend some great time getting to know her. We expected him to come earlier than he did, so I went into overdrive preparing for him to come home with us any day! It was a "long" two weeks as I jumped every single time the phone rang, expecting news. On December 14th, we had dinner with our birthmom and she was looking incredibly uncomfortable! So, I was not surprised when I got the call about 12 hours later that she was at the hospital and in labor.

I can't wait to share more of our story... how different this experience has been (than it was with Ben), how much God has taught us through this and all that we have learned!

!6 months old

Thank you all so much for your comments, emails and FB messages about my last post. It is certainly encouraging to know that I am not alone in those thoughts and feelings! And to be honest, I don't feel that way as often as I used to. Things are easier now that he is walking and we can get out and do fun stuff. But, I will always have that mom guilt that I could be doing everything better. I just try to remind myself every day to give myself some grace in that and keep pressing forward. I know that all mommas feel that way and that no matter how old he is, I will probably always feel that way!

So, now that I am back to blogging, I have lots of catching up to do. But that will have to happen another day. For now, here is where we are and what we are up to!

Ben is 16 months old this week!

His personality has really come out and he is so much fun! He is silly, sweet, loving, and sensitive. But he is ALL BOY. He is obsessed with sports. Obsessed. Especially anything with a ball. In fact, he still won't say "Mama", but I hear "Ball" about 7000 times a day. Anything that is slightly round is a ball. And anything that is remotely long is a golf club. This is what we do ALL. DAY. LONG.

He doesn't really care about any tv shows, but will sit magnetized to the tv for hours if golf is on! It is so crazy!

He is also a big fan of his baseball T and loves his basketball goal. And he is actually really good at all of them. I think that we have a natural athlete on our hands!

And a whole pit full of balls that he can throw? HEAVEN.

He is such a good kid and I am so blessed to be his mom. Every day, I thank God for the chance that He has given me to be a part of Ben's life and to be his mom. I could not be more in love.

Mom envy

It will come as no surprise when I tell you that I have kind-of given up on the whole blogging thing.

You didn't even get pics of Ben's first Christmas or birthday! (Of course, the only people that are left reading this blog are probably people that have seen the pics on FB anyway.)

I don't remember the last time that I checked my google reader and read everyone's blogs. I bet I have 5000 new posts waiting to be read and commented on. Needless to say, I will never get caught up. I just had to step away from reading others blogs every day. To be honest.... it just wasn't good for me.

Often times, reading other blogs just gives me "mom envy." It just makes me feel even more inadequate and like I am failing at this whole mom thing. So many others have it "all together" with like 15 kids and yet still have time to be the perfect wife, friend, blogger and mom. Their crafts get done, they go on dates, on girls trips, blog daily, volunteer and serve. They have it all together.

And comparing myself to those supermoms just accentuates the fact that I don't have it all together.

Can I just be real with you? I really thought that I would be better at this mom thing. I thought it would flow naturally, that I would never tire, I would have it all together and be the best mom that ever lived. And I hate the fact that somedays a productive day for me includes two errands, some laundry and dinner on the table.

I have tried to give myself permission to not have thank you notes written the same day, to accept that my child is not going to have the cutest room on the internet and that my crafts will never be featured on pinterest.

I still want to be the Best. Mom. Ever.

I thought that I would love every single minute of being a stay at home mom. I thought that my son would be stimulated and nurtured every single second of every single day. He would never watch a minute of tv. That he would be talking, walking, and writing his name and driving a car by 6 months old because of my incredible mothering skills.
The truth? Sometimes I just want him to sit and watch a movie for 30 minutes so that I don't have to play peek-a-boo one more time. Sometimes, I want him to play alone so that I can go to the bathroom by myself. I want to take a shower just once when I want to, not when Ben is napping. I want to sleep all night long.
I thought that I would be supernaturally patient with him and soak up every memory. The truth? Most days, I just pray that I can make it to naptime.

And then I feel guilty, like I shouldn't admit that it isn't easy.

I wanted this, I prayed for this. You prayed for this. So, how could I ever NOT love every single second?

He is such a sweet kid. He's funny and loving. And I do not take for granted how BLESSED I am to have this child. SO, SO BLESSED. I love him more than I ever thought possible and I thank God daily for the chance to be his mom. Even just reading over the past paragraphs makes me cringe that I feel this way at times.

But, it's the truth. And I am saying it because I cannot believe that I am the only one that feels this way. And maybe someone needs to hear today that they are not alone. Because I know that I would like to, every once in a while.

So, that is the reason for my blog break. I actually wrote this post months ago and just never had the nerve to post it. I have the nerve now because I have recently been reminded, by several people in my life, the power that can come through encouragement and honesty. God has put us all here together with very different gifts, very different journeys, different struggles and different victories. But, we are all here for one purpose and I hope that on my journey, I will have some friends that can walk along side of me. And maybe we can encourage each other along the way.

So be warned... I'M BACK!!!!

One year in a flash

I realize that I have a lot to catch up on and have not posted in a long time (which I will explain in another post), but I wanted to share this video with you...

I made a video for Ben's birthday party and never could figure out how to export it. So, I finally just redid it in another program. Then, I tried to post it to Facebook, but it will not let me because of copyright issues with the music playing in the background.

It's not the exact same as the original, but I wanted to have a version to share with those that did not get to see it. Sorry that it is so long, but it's hard to choose from over 15,000 pictures!

Hope you enjoy!
